Digital Business (B. A.)

[Translate to English:] Application period for the winter semester 2025/26: 2 May to 31 August

We are creators of digital transformation...

Digital business models focus on an outstanding customer experience. A few examples: Streaming opens up access to worldwide media libraries for a flat rate. Cars are getting new functions "over the air" and voice assistants, powered by generative AI, are on the verge of a breakthrough. Social media as a data-driven business model provides social contacts worldwide for free for customers.

We offer a practice-oriented degree program based on the latest scientific findings that provides the necessary skills for the design, implementation and management of digital business models. Successful internal and external specialists from the fields of agile methods, e-commerce, business analytics and artificial intelligence (and much more) will accompany you on your learning journey.

If you are interested in a dual study program, we have entered into cooperation agreements with renowned business partners (e.g. Audi, MediaMarktSaturn) and many small and medium-sized companies.

...and the starting point for many successful careers

The economy urgently needs specialists who understand the possibilities of digitalization, can develop new digital business models and, above all, implement them. This degree program therefore aims to train a new generation of "digital transformers" who will use their knowledge and skills to drive the digital transformation of the economy.

The Digital Business B.A. program provides a solid foundation in business administration and prepares you for a career in areas such as data analysis, content marketing, digital marketing campaigns, e-commerce, product management or project management.

The success of Bachelor Digital Business graduates proves us right: they have embarked on impressive career paths, from product managers in the automotive industry to social media managers in tech companies and founders of video start-ups. A Digital Business degree at THI opens up countless opportunities. Apply now and help create the digital future!

Structure

1st-3rd semester

Digital Business is an undergraduate programme of seven semesters and is modular in structure.
The first three semesters focus on basic skills:

  • Business skills are acquired in the modules on business management, marketing, accounting, logistics, HR management and organisation.
  • IT skills are taught in the modules dealing with internet technologies, software development basics and digital services in the front and back office.
  • Students acquire methodological skills in classic and agile project management methods, business process management, methods of scientific working and quantitative methods.
  • Language skills are enhanced through the teaching of English for business purposes.
  • Practical work experience is provided by means of an eight-week basic internship to be completed between semesters before the start of the fourth Semester.
4th-7th semester

The second degree phase (4th - 7th semester) comprises three theoretical study semesters and one practical semester of 18 weeks in the 5th or 6th semester. The three theoretical study semesters consist of the following modules:

  • In-depth business skills cover business strategy and digital business models, corporate social responsibility, IT law and digital business law.
  • The advanced IT skills taught are IT security management, business intelligence, business analytics and digital entrepreneurship.
  • Interdisciplinary skills are acquired in modules dealing with business modelling and business planning, a social project, an in-depth seminar on digital business and an innovation project.

Students can specialise according to preference by opting for an alternating selection of four in-depth modules.

One freely selectable specialised technical module, a freely selectable module on sustainability and a freely selectable module on linguistic and social skills allow students to develop their intercultural, international, linguistic and social capabilities.

Testimonials

Sarah Amler, Graduate

"Above all, the interactive lectures with much more practical relevance than I would have expected in a degree course really inspire me and motivate me to think for myself. The theoretical content can always be applied directly to real-life situations. As a result, I feel perfectly prepared for the challenges of my future professional life in the age of digitalization."

Lukas Gloßner, Student

"The Digital Business course at Ingolstadt University of Applied Sciences was exactly what I had hoped for. The practical orientation enabled me to apply theoretical knowledge directly to real projects. The dedicated lecturers and the broad module plan create a good knowledge base, which in turn creates a wide range of career opportunities. I was also very satisfied with the university itself and the opportunities it offers. I also took advantage of the opportunity to gain experience during a semester abroad and I can recommend it 100% to everyone. Overall, definitely an excellent choice for a successful professional future in the digital sector."

Tamara Heiss, Student

"I decided to study Digital Business, because I was already interested in topics such as digitalization, marketing and everything to do with e-commerce. It is precisely this content that is taught to us in the lectures with interesting practical examples from our lecturers. In particular, the combination with the practical phases as part of my dual study program (with MediaMarktSaturn) allows the theoretical content to be dovetailed with practice. For me, Digital Business is one of the most future-oriented degree programs at THI, which offers a wide range of prospects in the working world."

Robert Kemna, Graduate

"The Digital Business course at THI is the ideal choice for me, as it offers practical and innovative content that covers all relevant aspects of digitalization. The variety of subject areas, from IT and business administration to E-Commerce and marketing, enables me to acquire a broad knowledge base and to design my studies according to my interests, as well as to prepare myself ideally for practical cases. I particularly appreciate the personal interaction at THI, where lecturers with practical experience and diverse student clubs create an inspiring learning environment."

Björn-Christian Ningel, Graduate

“Studying Digital Business at Ingolstadt University of Applied Sciences was the perfect starting point for me to take my professional career to the next level. The in-depth knowledge transfer in the world of digital business models and innovative technologies still helps me in my daily work today. The practice-oriented teaching and the opportunity to make valuable contacts with the regional economy and the Bavarian start-up scene through the student start-up initiative 'NEWEXIST' were particularly valuable. These experiences paved the way for me to actively work on a start-up-friendly future for Germany and Europe today as Head of Member Relations at the Bundesverband Deutsche Startups e.V.”

Quick Info

Admission and application

The Digital Business degree program starts in the winter term. Application via Hochschulstart (DOSV) is not necessary. Registration for the study program starts on May 2 for the winter semester. Online application is possible via the Primuss applicant portal of THI.

Find here more details about the application process at the THI.

International students

Anyone with an international university degree/higher education qualification wanting to study at a university in Germany needs a so-called Hochschulzugangsberechtigung (HZB), or higher education entrance qualification. This lets applicants show that their educational background or professional qualification allows them to study in Germany, i.e. they have the necessary higher education entrance qualification to register for a course.

The recognition of the qualification is linked to certain requirements. If the certificate of education is recognised as a higher education entrance qualification in Germany, the international student may apply for all courses (general qualification) or for certain courses (subject-specific qualification). Two to three semesters of study in the home country may be recognised as a higher education entrance qualification in Germany, depending on the country of origin. The following link provide information for university applicants from abroad about the application process at the THI.

Applicants from non-German-speaking countries applying for a German-language degree program must also provide proof of sufficient knowledge of the German language with level B2.
Proof of having passed the German language exam must be submitted at the latest upon enrollment. A list of language certificates classified as equivalent can be found under General Statutes on the pages of the Office of Legal Affairs.

Dual studies or studies with in-depth practical

The dual studies programme enables a combination of practical training elements in a company with the theoretical education provided by the university. There is a choice of either the joint model (academic study + vocational training) or the degree course with vocational experience (academic study + intense practical phases). There is an obvious advantage to students here: practically oriented academic study generally enables a particularly smooth transition from university to the world of work. What is more, the student usually receives financial remuneration from the company concerned.

The Digital Business course offers both models.

In the joint model, students may start working at the company several months before the start of the first semester, depending on the company concerned. At the start of the course there is an alternation between theory (during the semester) and practical experience (between semesters and during the practical semesters). In order to embark on a dual studies programme, students have to apply to both a company and to THI (be sure to take note of company application deadlines!).

More info on our dual studies-pages, or check dual cooperation partner companies. Even if no partner company is currently active in this degree programme, you are welcome to contact us.

Job profiles

Digital Business Manager

Digital business derives from the fact that information and communication technology are not used for service provision alone. In many sectors, the products and services themselves have software and devices such as sensors as deeply integrated elements and are interconnected with each other (Internet of Things/Services).

On the one hand this gives rise to new digital business models, as is the case with Airbnb, Wimdu and Uber, which act as agencies for private accommodation and transportation services. But existing business models also have to be digitally enriched or altered in order to gain or generate a competitive advantage (digital transformation). An example is Kärcher, a company which fits its sweeping and cleaning machines with telematics modules that relay information on operating times, locations, charge status and potential problems. As a result, Kärcher is able to offer its customers additional solutions such as analysis of idle time or preventive maintenance.
In order to be actively involved in such developments and to be able to manage them, staff have to possess sound skills both in the area of business administration (e.g. marketing, business process management and strategic management) as well as in the area of IT (e.g. development and operation of innovative services) - and they must be able to creatively combine the two areas. The following is a selection of tasks commonly found in this vocational field:

Project and leadership tasks at internationally oriented SMEs and large-scale corporations of all sectors in the following areas (selection):

Project tasks

  • Planning, development and implementation of digital business services
  • Digital business architecture management
  • Digital business governance
  • Integration of digital business services in business processes along the value creation chain
  • Digital business intelligence and digital business analytics

Once an individual has gained the relevant job experience, he or she will be able to take on a broad range of management tasks.

Management tasks

  • Strategic management incl. development of digital business models
  • Digital business services portfolio management
  • Product management for digital business services
  • Business development for digital business models and digital business services
  • Management and development of customer and supplier relations (CRM, SRM) based on digital business services

The degree course also provides an excellent basis for setting up a business within the entire digital value creation chain.

Extras

Co-operation partners for the study with in-depth practice are currently being acquired.

International

THI has set itself the goal of encouraging as many students as possible to undertake a study trip or internship abroad. This is because international experience enhances job prospects - not just due to the language skills acquired abroad but first and foremost because of additional qualities such as independence, tolerance and flexibility.

For this reason we would encourage you to take this opportunity and make the most of the study trip or internship programmes offered by THI in other countries. Our international network consists of more than 150 partner universities as well as numerous international companies and it is growing constantly worldwide. In this connection, students should feel free to use the International Office as a central point of contact.

The Double Degree offers you a special opportunity: Here you study at least one year at one of our partner universities in Australia or Scotland and thus successfully complete your studies with a double degree. Our International Office is the central contact point for all students.

FAQs

What is the difference to the Bachelor of Media Psychology and Digital Business?

What is the difference to the Bachelor of Business Informatics course?

Am I guaranteed a study place if I have a dual practice partner?

Admission to a study place and the contract with a THI dual partner are independent of each other. This means that you must also meet the admission requirements at THI in order to start the dual study program.

Is the internship semester also compulsory for dual study students?

In the "Vocational Experience" model of the Digital Business degree program, the practical semester is completed at the dual practice partner, usually in the 6th semester.

I have completed apprenticeship XYZ, can I get credits for this?

University studies and apprenticeship are at very different levels of the education system. The recognition of credits is generally assessed on an individual application basis. Unfortunately, it is not possible to make general statements in advance.

The credit recognition process takes place after enrolment in the first semester of study.

What level of German do I have to prove if I come from abroad?

Applicants from non-German-speaking countries who are applying for a German-language degree program must provide proof of sufficient knowledge of the German language at level B2. Proof of having passed the German language test must be submitted at the latest upon enrolment. A list of language certificates classified as equivalent can be found under General Statutes on the website of the Office of Legal Affairs.

Can I work during my studies?

Many students work as student employees to finance their studies. However, you should focus on obtaining a good degree during your studies. If you want to do more than work as a student employee (e.g. full-time or part-time work), we recommend a different study model (e.g. part-time study).
