Rain system
The rain system in the indoor test hall can be used to simulate realistic rain scenarios. The reproducibility of the weather conditions is the focus of the setup. In addition to static sensor or vehicle tests, also dynamic driving tests can be carried out on the uniformly rain-covered area of approx. 200 m2. The length of the rain surface of 50 m enables research on the effects on environmental sensors even over greater distances.
The rain intensity is adjustable and can be adapted to the desired scenario, even to extreme conditions with precipitation rates of up to 110 mm/h. This allows, for example, the effects on environmental sensors or the entire vehicle system to be investigated.
Real rain was measured using special measurement equipment in order to obtain reference values for the design of the rain system. In addition, weather data from the German Weather Service (DWD) spanning several decades were analysed to identify and replicate relevant precipitation events. The results were incorporated into the continuous optimization of the test system. The system is operated with three powerful water pumps that supply an extensive network of pipes and nozzles. The patented test system ensures that the rain produced has realistic characteristics (such as droplet size distribution or the presence of large water droplets).
The test system can be combined with other test equipment, such as the indoor positioning system for accurate positioning and ground truth of static and dynamically moving objects. Various targets (EuroNCAP compliant) are also available. In addition to the rain effect, the effects of standing water on the road or spray on the environmental sensors can also be investigated.
Application examples
