Traffic Safety

A core objective of 5GoIng is the establishment of a 5G test field at the high-tech hub IN-Campus to create an Open Innovation Lab. Equipped with 5G, state-of-the-art sensor technology and IT, this will create the best possible conditions for researching and developing 5G applications with a focus on connected mobility and a wide range of applications for the area of traffic safety.

 

5G & Multi Access Edge Computing

The use of 5G communication technologies and Multi Access Edge Computing (MEC) is intended to increase the safety of all road users in traffic circles with automated vehicles. For this purpose, the infrastructure of the traffic circle is extended and networked with high-performance sensor technology. The 5G-based information exchange between vehicles and the infrastructure improves the environment perception of the automated vehicles. The infrastructure-based sensor technology can detect additional safety-critical conflict situations in the traffic circle and distribute warning messages to networked vehicles. The warning function includes detection of vehicles as well as pedestrians and bicyclists crossing the approaches and exits as they bypass the traffic circle. With 5G, a MEC solution is connected in which, after local preprocessing of sensor data,objects are detected, classified and tracked, and critical situations are identified. In addition to the comprehensive networking of vehicles, traffic infrastructure and IT systems for MEC, the added value comes from the transmission of sensor data with very low latency and high reliability in the context of URLLC. Furthermore, it is to be explored to what extent recovery data from MEC can be used for environment awareness involving Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs).

The application will result in solution strategies

  • for highly automated vehicles, 
  • for mixed traffic of automated and non-automated vehicles as well as 
  • for the integration of additional (vulnerable) road users, 

which can be determined in particular via data available in the MEC.
