Mobility Management and Mobility Technologies (M. Sc.)

New degree program from winter semester 2025/26 - application period 2 May to 31 August

Master Talk  for prospective students (online):

  • Monday, July 7, 6.00 p.m. (CET)
  • Monday, July 14, 6.00 p.m. (CET)
  • Monday, July 21, 6.00 p.m. (CET)

The dial-in link for the Master Talk will be announced on this page in advance.

The consecutive Master's degree program offers a specialization in the field of innovative, integrated and sustainable mobility, taking into account aspects of a mobility turnaround as well as technological change and the challenges of the automotive and mobility industry.

The focus is on all forms of innovative mobility in the areas of individual and collective mobility. Technological challenges, innovative mobility concepts and their implementation will be highlighted. The use of AI and the role of mobility and traffic data management or a consistent user experience in mobility are central elements of the curriculum.

More than any other, the mobility industry is undergoing a major transformation. This makes shaping the “mobility of the future” an urgent task of the present. In order to enable intermodal mobility, it is essential to network public and individual means of transportation. Transport operators must continue to develop their physical and digital business models in order to meet diversified mobility needs. The automotive industry is also faced with the strategic task of developing a comprehensive mobility service from the development, production and sale of vehicles.

An integrated mobility strategy requires technological innovations as well as systematic and sustainable mobility management. The degree program teaches technical and methodological skills and is aimed at interdisciplinary students with a background in economics, engineering or information technology.

  • Please note: Your admission cannot be reviewed until all application documents have been submitted. It is not possible to make a definitive statement without looking at the certificates first. We cannot provide advance information regarding your chances of admission by e-mail or telephone.

Currently 12-15 students are admitted per semester.

NOTE on 180 ECTS:

Can I apply even if I have obtained less than 210 ECT (normally 180 ECTS) in my previous bachelor’s degree?

It is possible to apply with less than 210 ECTS; however, proof of compensation of the missing 30 ECTS has to be provided no later than the end of the application period by means of:

  • proof of practical experience outside the degree course which corresponds to the practical semester of an economics, engineering or information technology bachelor's degree in terms of content and scope, or
  • proof of practical or theoretical study and examinations passed at a German or foreign university in addition to the student’s first degree which corresponds in content and scope to the demands of an economics, engineering or information technology bachelor's degree.

NOTE: Please note that where documents are submitted to show evidence of practical professional experience or either practical or theoretical achievements worth 30 ECTS – in addition to a bachelor’s degree – the documents must clearly indicate that the 30 ECTS were obtain over and above the bachelor's degree programme. Confirmation can be provided by the university showing that the ECTS/internship were not counted towards the first degree. The duration of the practical professional experience gained outside the first degree should be equivalent to 20 weeks of full-time work. Furthermore, the internship reference must be submitted in officially certified form together with the other application documents. In both cases, we recommend to submit meaningful documents from which the Examination Committee can clearly understand the substantive aspects immediately.

Please see the Study and Examination Regulations for details.

Dual studies or studies with in-depth practical

The dual studies programme enables a combination of practical training elements in a company with the theoretical education provided by the university. There is a choice of either the joint model (academic study + vocational training) or the degree course with vocational experience (academic study + intense practical phases). There is an obvious advantage to students here: practically oriented academic study generally enables a particularly smooth transition from university to the world of work. What is more, the student usually receives financial remuneration from the company concerned.

In the joint model, students may start working at the company several months before the start of the first semester, depending on the company concerned. At the start of the course there is an alternation between theory (during the semester) and practical experience (between semesters and during the practical semesters). In order to embark on a dual studies programme, students have to apply to both a company and to THI (be sure to take note of company application deadlines!).

Job profiles

The qualification profile acquired with the degree program offers graduates the opportunity to take on highly qualified specialist and management roles in business areas of the physical and digital mobility ecosystem. These include traditional car manufacturers, suppliers to the automotive industry, mobility service providers such as public transport operators, sharing providers, digital business model operators as well as economic and municipal organizations in the context of mobility and transport. The knowledge they acquire enables them, for example, to develop strategic concepts for the design of innovative mobility services through to the concrete implementation of such mobility concepts in the relevant environment.

Internship

Subject-related practical experience and internships are an advantage but not a pre-requisite.

Extras

The degree program pursues an interdisciplinary approach and combines economic, engineering and information technology perspectives in order to meet the mobility challenges of the future. Students with a background in economics should therefore have an interest in technical solutions and in information and communication technology for vehicles, infrastructure and mobility. Students with an engineering background, on the other hand, should have an interest in economically sustainable issues relating to technical solutions. It is not necessary to have detailed basic knowledge of the “foreign” scientific field before starting the course.

International

Mobility issues can relate to local and regional traffic problems and they can also have an international impact. The focus is certainly on central issues such as the problems in international megacities (e.g. Mexico City, Beijing, Rio de Janeiro) and the international interlinking of passenger and goods transport. Even though mobility issues always have to be adapted to the given local situation, the underlying issues of traffic flow, environmental pollution and mobility services are always raised within an international context in terms of the application of Solutions.

It is also possible to take a double degree, which means you will acquire two full qualifications at the same time, one at the THI Business School and one at a foreign partner university. To do this, you are required to study at the partner university for at least one year. More information about double degrees is available from the International Office.

Lecturers

The interdisciplinary approach of the course is reflected in the teaching line-up. Modules are taught by lecturers from all three faculties. In addition to this, lecturers from the automotive industry and the field of electromobility provide a practical perspective for students.

Information about knowledge of English

Recommended English language level
In this degree program, some modules are taught in English. Furthermore, it is possible to write seminar papers and final theses in English. This can be an opportunity if the seminar papers and final theses are written in cooperation with international companies. For a successful participation in the modules, as well as a successful completion of seminar papers and final theses, a level of C1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is recommended.

Possibilities to achieve the recommended language level
Students who do not have the recommended language level at the beginning of the study can earn this level during their studies through the offers of the THI Language Centre. This offer includes e.g. Business English, Refresher courses in grammar and spelling, and TOEFL preparation courses. In addition, the THI Language Centre provides individual advice to students on how to improve the English language level.

FAQs

How and when can I apply?
  • All information about the Master's application
  • Application period for the winter semester: May 2 to July 15
  • There are no advantages or disadvantages for applicants who have already applied once.
What documents do I have to submit with my application?

You will find a list of all documents in the application tool. Here you will also find information on the required form of the relevant documents to be submitted. All documents must first be uploaded online. If you are successfully admitted to the Master degree program, you must submit selected documents in the original or certified.

Can the bachelor’s degree certificate be submitted at a later stage?

The Bachelor's degree certificate can be submitted later if proof is provided within the usual application deadline that the applicant will complete their first degree with 210 ECTS credits by the end of the current semester. This is usually done by uploading a current transcript of records and proof of the final ECTS total acquired upon completion of the degree program (e.g. excerpt from the study and examination regulations). The degree certificate or a certificate of successful completion of the first degree program must be submitted at the latest at the time of enrollment.

Are waiting semesters counted in connection with the master’s programme?

Waiting semesters are not taken into account for application to a master degree program.

Can the master program be taken on a part-time basis?

The courses of the degree program are offered on three fixed weekdays if possible, so that in principle there is still the possibility of working part-time alongside your studies. However, please bear in mind the high workload this entails. All master degree programs require preparation and follow-up work. In addition, several projects are due during the semester. In combination with a regular job, the scope for other private activities will be correspondingly small.
