From X-rays to MRI: Students at Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt (THI) explore 125 years of medical technology

Students from the Artificial Intelligence, Biomedical Engineering, and Computational Life Sciences study courses visited the Siemens Healthineers MedMuseum in Erlangen. The excursion was accompanied by Professors Matthias Eckert, Steffen Lehner, Ludwig Maximilian Lausser, and Marion Menzel.

The visit provided exciting insights into the development of modern medical and diagnostic procedures. The focus was on the milestones of medical imaging - from the discovery of X-rays by Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen to early X-ray machines and historical radiation protection measures through to modern computer tomographs and magnetic resonance tomographs.

Participants were also given an insight into the development of hearing aids and pacemakers. The historical exhibits made it clear how closely medical progress and technological innovation have been linked for decades and how diagnostic and therapeutic options have continuously evolved.

For the THI students, the excursion offered a vivid addition to the content of their academic studies. Modern imaging techniques and digital technologies play a central role, particularly in the fields of Artificial Intelligence, Medical Informatics, and Biomedical Engineering.

The excursion also highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary education at THI, in which Computer Science, Engineering Sciences, and medical applications are closely linked.
