Electrical Engineering and Electric Mobility (M. Eng.)

Application period for the summer semester 2027: Nov. 3, 2026 to Jan. 15, 2027

How do you develop complex systems for electric vehicles?

The Master’s programme in Electrical Engineering and Electromobility at THI prepares you for challenging engineering roles in the development of complex systems for hybrid and electric vehicles. Upon successfully completing your degree, you will be in high demand within the industry, not only in product development but also in manufacturing and testing. You will also have the option of pursuing a PhD or a career in research.

The Master’s programme in Electrical Engineering and Electromobility (EMO) at THI equips you with the engineering skills required to develop complex electrical and mechatronic systems in the automotive sector, as well as the application of model-based development techniques.

The programme comprises two full-time academic semesters and one semester dedicated to writing your Master’s thesis. During the first two semesters, you will deepen your knowledge of the components of electromobility as well as in the fields of modelling and simulation. You will learn methods for the mathematical description of all key aspects of electric mobility. This covers the full spectrum from the description of key components – such as electric motors, power electronics, energy storage systems, gearboxes and internal combustion engines – right through to the complete vehicle. Following the first two semesters, you will write your Master’s thesis – either at THI or as part of a work placement in a company.

Once you have successfully completed your Master’s degree, a wide range of career opportunities in the field of electromobility will be open to you – from the automotive industry, through electric rail technology and electrically assisted two-wheelers, to medical technology and mobile devices in the consumer goods industry.

Contents

The Master's programme "Electrical Engineering and Electric Mobility" comprises two full-time semesters. The third semester is dedicated to writing the master's thesis, which can also be done in a company as part of the practical work.
The course of study conveys the engineering procedures in the field of developing electrotechnical and mechatronic systems in the automobile. Without the use of model-based techniques, the complexity of these systems would no longer be manageable.

Quick Info

Admission and application

Application
Students of Electrical Engineering and Electric Mobility may begin their course in the summer or winter semester.

Prerequisites
Bachelor’s degree with at least 210 ECTS credit points in the field of electrical engineering, IT, mechatronics, a related subject or an equivalent qualification, acquired either in Germany or abroad. As a general rule, a minimum duration of three and a half years or seven semesters is required in cases where applicants hold a bachelor’s degree that is not based on the ECTS credit point system. A decision is made each semester as to whether admission limitations apply and what these are. The grade average or waiting period required to gain a place is not stipulated in advance but will depend on the number of applications and capacity available.

Job profiles

Although the Master's programme in Electrical Engineering of Mobile Systems is adapted to the needs of the automotive industry, graduates have a broad field of work in the area of electromobility from electric railway technology to electrically assisted driving in bicycles, motorbikes and electromobility in medical technology to the mobile devices of the "consumer" industry. For years, the number of employees in these areas of electrical engineering has been increasing significantly and steadily. However, the methods learned can also be excellently applied to portable devices, such as laptops, mobile phones and battery-powered machine tools, etc., thus considerably expanding the graduates' areas of application. Engineers with this knowledge are not only needed in product development, but also increasingly in manufacturing and testing. In Bavaria in the automotive industry, the demand for engineers with the training profile described is particularly pronounced in the cities of Munich and Ingolstadt due to the large presence of car manufacturers and the numerous suppliers.

Extras

The job profile of graduates is characterised by tasks in the areas of research, pre-development and development with a wide range of applications from the automotive industry to electromobility in the medical sector and mobile devices in the "consumer" industry.

The degree programme achieves a close interlocking of theory and practice through the large presence of automotive industrial companies in the region. In order to optimally prepare the students for the diverse tasks in industry and in the scientific field, the focus of the education is on the modelling and simulation of technical systems of electromobility.

Dual Studies

The dual Master's programme at THI offers optimal career opportunities. In addition to the regular degree programme, the dual Master's programme includes intensive work experience in a company. It is consecutive and is aimed at both non-dual and dual Bachelor graduates who have previously completed a combined degree programme or a degree programme with in-depth practical experience.

During the dual Master's programme, you will receive a salary from your company. The salary for Master's degree programmes should be appropriately higher than the salary for Bachelor's degree programmes.

Special feature: Normal duration of study with significantly more practical experience than in a regular Master's programme

We look forward to receiving your application!
