Between Bauhaus and Bytes: Werkschau by Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt (THI) Reimagines Design

Light installations, projections and interactive applications transformed KAP94 into a space for experimentation in digital design: At the final exhibition of the Technical Design study course, students presented their work under the title ‘A digital reinterpretation of Oskar Schlemmer’s iconic Bauhaus Theatre’ and demonstrated how the ideas of the Bauhaus can be adapted to the digital age.

The projects took their inspiration from the stage work of the Bauhaus artist Oskar Schlemmer. The students drew on his design principles of body, space, form and movement to develop their own original digital concepts. Animations, projections and interactive applications opened up new perspectives on the iconic theatre and demonstrated how historical design ideas can be further developed using contemporary technologies.

Following the opening, the numerous guests explored the exhibition and engaged in conversation with the students about their work. The historic vaulted rooms of KAP94 provided a striking contrast to the digital installations and emphasised the dialogue between design tradition and contemporary design.

The exhibition impressively demonstrated how design education at the THI draws on historical influences and develops them further using digital tools. The result was a body of work that does not merely reproduce the Bauhaus, but translates its ideas into the present day.
