Psychology and Sociology of Sustainable Transformation (B. Sc.)

Starting in winter semester 2026/27

→ Application for a start of studies in winter term is open until Aug. 31!

How do you shape change within societies and organisations in a way that engages people and secures the future?

Sustainable transformation requires a deep understanding of how people feel, think and act – and how social systems and commercial organisations function. On the Psychology and Sociology of Sustainable Transformation degree programme, you will explore individual, organisational and societal dynamics. You will learn how narratives emerge, why social factors are economically relevant, and why some organisations succeed in navigating change whilst others fail. Values, norms, communication, participation, socio-cultural aspects and psychological safety are central themes.
You will examine change processes in urban development, the energy transition, climate adaptation, consumption and digitalisation, and understand how economic constraints and global relationships influence behaviour. Furthermore, you will combine the fundamentals of psychology, personality and occupational psychology with sociological perspectives on culture, society and power structures. In addition, you will acquire skills in AI applications and learn how to effectively combine human and artificial intelligence.

Contents

What exactly are you studying?

How people make or fail to make decisions

Psychology: Motivation, behavior, resilience, narratives

How society blocks or accelerates change

Sociology: Power, systems, inequality

How organizations shape and are shaped by the world

Sustainability: Climate change, cities, mobility, technology

How participation actually happens

Transformation: Change, innovation, acceptance

How scientific measurement works

Methods: Collecting, analyzing, and evaluating data

The "Psychology" section of the program focuses primarily on the psychological foundations, social psychology, industrial and organizational psychology, economic, environmental and sustainability psychology, and communication psychology, as well as participation in several stages. In the "Sociology" section, you will focus on macrosociology (large-scale social structures and processes, such as social inequality), microsociology (the study of direct action and the interactions between individuals), the sociology of transformation and sustainability, and cultural sociology. You will learn to connect and apply these two fields of research throughout your studies. Over the course of seven semesters, you will gain comprehensive knowledge of important psychological and sociological processes within current areas of tension.

How long is the application period for the 2026/2027 winter semester?

The application period runs through August 31, 2026.

Can I be admitted with a vocational high school diploma?

Yes, you can enroll in this program with a subject-specific high school diploma (from Bavaria or equivalent) and any area of specialization.

How do I find a partner company for a dual degree program?

You can start by learning about THI’s existing industry partners. You can find an overview here:

https://www.thi.de/studium/studienangebote/duales-studium/

In addition, you can also reach out directly to companies that align with your degree program and pique your interest. If a company is generally interested in a dual partnership, we’ll be happy to check whether a corresponding agreement with THI can be established or already exists.

It is important that you find a suitable industry partner by the end of the second semester.

Regardless of this, you’ll gain a wide range of practical experience in the program even without the dual model—for example, through applied course modules, industry partners, internships, and, if applicable, part-time student jobs.

Is my future career field at risk because of artificial intelligence?

No—quite the opposite. Artificial intelligence will transform many tasks, but it will not replace the skills that are central to the Psychology and Sociology of Sustainable Transformation program. Especially in transformation processes, we need people who understand how organizations, groups, and individuals deal with change. This includes psychological and sociological knowledge, communication skills, participation, conflict resolution, coaching, mediation, empirical research, and an understanding of social, environmental, and economic sustainability.

AI can provide support in areas such as data analysis, research, or text processing. However, the crucial tasks remain human: contextualizing problems, understanding interests, designing participatory processes, building trust, reflecting on ethical issues, and facilitating sustainable change in organizations and society.

The program therefore does not prepare students for a narrowly defined career path that could easily be automated, but rather for roles at the intersection of various fields—such as sustainability management, organizational development, stakeholder engagement, human resources, transformation, consulting, project management, social innovation, or research. It is precisely this combination of psychological, sociological, methodological, and sustainability-related knowledge that is becoming more important—not less—as a result of AI. Those who can use AI competently while also understanding people, organizations, and social dynamics will be in particularly high demand in the future.

How much science is covered in the program?

The program includes elements of the natural sciences but is primarily focused on the social, behavioral, and transformational sciences. If you’re interested in sustainability but would prefer to work less with technical and natural science topics and more with people, organizations, communication, and social change, this is the right program for you.

Topics in the natural sciences and statistics are covered where they are important for understanding sustainable development. The goal is not to conduct scientific research in the narrow sense, but rather to understand ecological and technical interrelationships well enough to design well-founded processes of social and organizational change.

We look forward to receiving your application!
