Engineering Sciences (B. Eng.)

Application for a start of studies in winter term is open until Aug. 31!

→ Application for a start for studies in winter term is open unteil Aug. 31!

How does a technical innovation change the world?

Are you interested in all aspects of technology? Do you want to develop the transport systems of the future, design innovative propulsion concepts or flight systems, design wind turbines, or model a machine’s digital twin? On the Bachelor’s degree programme in Engineering at THI, there are many exciting technologies waiting to be discovered.

In the first stage of your degree, you’ll delve into the key fundamentals of engineering and familiarise yourself with various engineering disciplines. In the second stage, you’ll choose your specialisation from five options: Development & Design, Digital Engineering, Electromobility, Flight Systems Development or Energy Engineering. Through compulsory elective modules, you’ll tailor your profile to suit your individual interests. During the practical study semester, you’ll apply your knowledge directly within a company and supplement it with seminars that accompany your practical work. You can gain international experience at a partner university abroad or during an internship semester abroad. For female students, we offer a mentoring programme and a dedicated network.

Contents

→ Application day on 21 July at 4 p.m. at Faculty M.

You can expect: Presentation of the degree programme, lab tours, exchange and getting to know each other.

The Bachelor's degree programme in Engineering teaches the general fundamentals of engineering in the first study section and offers the opportunity for orientation in various engineering subject areas.

Depending on their personal development and interests, students choose one of the five fields of study Development & Construction, Electromobility, Development of Flight Systems, Energy Technology or Digital Engineering in the 2nd study stage. The subject orientation within the fields of study can also be individually designed by taking compulsory elective modules.

In the practical study semester, the acquired competences and skills are applied in a professional environment and supplemented by practical courses.

You can gain international experience in a study semester at a foreign partner university or in a practical semester abroad. The flexible design of the study plan through elective modules favours the planning of a stay abroad.

We are committed to gender equality! We offer a mentoring programme (link) and network especially for female students. We have an above-average proportion of women in the engineering degree programme of around 35%.

Tuition Fees and Financing

General information on scholarship:

Financing your study programme might be a big challenge for you. On our homepage you find different opportunities of financing your academic studies at our university. Link:

Financial assistance

Please note that financial aid programmes are mostly not open to foreign students. For scholarships for students from abroad you may have a look here:

https://www.daad.de/deutschland/stipendium/datenbank/en/12359-finding-scholarships/
Public funding (BAföG) is only available to Germans and to EU citizens if they have spent a considerable part of their education in Germany. The university awards a scholarship called Deutschlandstipendium once a year which cannot fully cover living expenses. Additionally we have limited funds and support some international students for a maximum of one semester. Please do not actively approach the International Office on scholarships, once a year a call for application automatically reaches all international students.

Third party scholarship:

  • If you are an applicant from abroad, you may qualify for a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD): www.daad.de

International

You can gain international experience during a study semester at a partner university abroad or during an internship semester abroad. The flexible design of the curriculum through compulsory elective modules favours the planning of a stay abroad. The International Office will be happy to advise you on the topic of studying abroad during your degree programme.

Internship

FAQs

What is the difference between this and other engineering degree courses, such as Mechanical Engineering and Automotive Engineering?

The first year of study is to be understood as an orientation phase. In addition to the general engineering basics, you will gain initial insights into special disciplines such as product development, design and calculation in different areas, materials technology and computer science, as well as business aspects. Other differences compared to the other degree programmes are the diverse elective options from the second year onwards. In the 3rd semester, you choose one of the five study areas "Development and Construction", "Digital Engineering", "Electromobility", "Development of Flight Systems" or "Energy Technology". Within this focus, there are further options that allow you to individually design the direction of your studies.

How free and flexible are the options within a focus area?

Within a field of study, there are between 14 or 15 possible modules from which you can choose 13 compulsory elective modules of the field of study. In addition, there are four subject-specific compulsory elective modules (FW subjects), which can also be selected from a catalogue according to the field of study. You are largely free to choose and combine the individual modules. To help you, there are sample timetables that you can use as a guide.

Will I have any disadvantages later on compared with students directly studying Automotive Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Business Engineering?

No. You only decide on the subject orientation of your studies one year later. You can choose the modules so that they match those from the original degree programmes or you can combine them according to your personal interests.
