Hydrogen Technologies & Applications (M. Eng.)

Application period for the summer semester 2027: Oct. 15, 2026 to Jan. 15, 2027

Why is hydrogen so important in the energy transition?

Are you passionate about the potential of hydrogen technologies and would you like to specialise in this field after completing your Bachelor’s degree in engineering? The Master’s programme in Hydrogen Technology and Economics at THI offers you the highest level of specialist expertise in this field.

You will learn to understand the hydrogen technology chain – from production through storage and transport to the associated applications – to develop new products and solutions, and to assess these in terms of their economic viability and sustainability. These are skills that are in high demand for specialist and managerial roles in this sector.

The three-semester programme is divided into two theory semesters, during which you’ll attend specialist lectures in German and English, and one semester dedicated to your Master’s thesis. You can study the Master’s programme on-campus or online. Laboratory practicals take place on-campus during a few block sessions. Throughout the programme, you can expect intensive support and networking opportunities.

Note:

Previous title of the master's degree: Hydrogen Technology and Economics

Starting in the winter semester 2026/27, only the English-language master's degree in Hydrogen Technologies & Applications will be offered to new students.

Hydrogen as a fuel

Hydrogen offers an environmentally friendly alternative to fossil fuels and can be used instead of oil and gas. The infrastructure for this is still being developed.

[Translate to English:] Tanken mit Wasserstoff

Hydrogen from solar energy

If hydrogen is produced from solar energy, this form of hydrogen production is completely regenerative and counts as green hydrogen.

Quick Info

Admission and application

In the Hydrogen Technologies and Applications degree programme it is possible to start in the winter and summer semester.

Requirements:

The requirements can be found in the study and examination regulations for this degree programme.

Here you can find information on the Master's application

Information for applicants

  • Applicants who hold a bachelor’s degree obtained in Germany or who are EU nationals will be admitted without further assessment, provided that the general entry requirements are met.
  • Applicants with a bachelor’s degree obtained in a non-EU country must undergo a selection process, provided that the formal entry requirements are met.

The selection process consists of two stages. For admission to THI, the following criteria are applied in Stage 1, which increase your chances of being admitted:
    1. Bachelor’s degree grade
    2. University ranking
    3. Practical experience
    4. Entrance test for Master’s programmes, such as the GRE General Test (Graduate Record Examination)

Candidates selected on the basis of these criteria will be invited to online selection interviews.
An assessment interview that is judged as passed leads to admission.
The faculty informs invited applicants by email about the specific interview appointment.

  • Please note the Regulations for International Orientation and Selection Procedures.

Dubious Application Agencies

Currently, THI is receiving an increasing amount of information regarding fraudulent activities in connection with student applications to THI. Therefore, it is important for you to know the following:

  1. THI does not work with agencies. Please apply directly to THI via the Primuss application portal.
  2. THI never asks for money via agencies for application purposes.
  3. THI only sends emails from @thi.de.
  4. THI never asks for money before you receive your admission letter. If you need a VPD from uni-assist, you will have to pay a processing fee to uni-assist. However, uni-assist only checks certain documents and does not grant admission to THI.
  5. The application process is conducted in the THI Primuss portal. Only there will you be able to access your application progress.

Urgent info for Master applicants from India!
