Mechanical Engineering (B. Eng.)

Application period for the winter semester 2027/28: May 2 to July 15, 2027

Application for a start of studies in winter term is open until Aug. 31!

Why is mechanical engineering a source of innovation?

Almost all everyday products are manufactured or operated using digital or networked machines – be it vehicles, packaging or tools. On the Bachelor’s degree programme in Mechanical Engineering at THI, you’ll gain a strong technical foundation, combined with a focus on mechatronics – including programming – energy efficiency in mechanical engineering, entrepreneurship and teamwork.

You can study with us in the HyFlex mode: through a variety of live streams from the lecture theatre, instructional videos, digital consultation hours and other digital formats, you’ll enjoy maximum flexibility. During compact on-campus phases, you’ll carry out your laboratory practicals, amongst other things, and work on real-world operational tasks as part of practical projects with companies. You’ll shape your personal profile through your chosen specialisations (Development and Design or Automotive Engineering), as well as through a potential study period abroad.

After completing your degree, as a mechanical engineer you’ll develop new products, organise modern manufacturing processes, work in technical product and project management, or provide consultancy services. There are no limits to the wide range of career opportunities available to you.

Contents

Your studies are characterised on the one hand by a broad technical foundation and on the other hand by the areas of mechatronics including programming, sustainability in mechanical engineering and entrepreneurship.  It is also important for us that you get to know and use virtual technology in the laboratory. Thus, the practical implementation of the study contents takes place on engine, transmission and roller test benches, in the wind tunnel, in the machine tool laboratory, on testing equipment for components and material samples or in the energy technology laboratory. In projects, students work with companies on problems from current operational practice. Teamwork plays a decisive role here.

With regard to the breadth and diversity of mechanical engineering, our students should be enabled to quickly familiarise themselves with one of the numerous fields of application through extensive knowledge in the mathematical, mechatronic and above all technical areas. This could be, for example, the development of a machine from mechatronics to programming to control, taking into account the topics of sustainability, reparability and the use of recycled materials.

Through the formation of study foci, you will be offered the opportunity to choose courses according to your preferences and career plans. In addition to technical competence, social and methodological skills are taught to promote personality development and leadership qualities.

International study aspects are designed to prepare you and enable you to meet the increasingly global challenges and demands and to hold your own in global markets. You can gain international experience during a theoretical or practical semester at a partner university or company abroad.

The Bachelor's programme comprises a total of seven semesters. In the basic studies the broad technical foundation is laid, including mechatronics and programming. With this, you are so well positioned that you can still change to all other mechanical engineering directions after the basic studies. The in-depth phase in the main study programme includes the practical semester (5th semester) and the choice of specialisations.

You can choose from the areas of "Development & Design" with the topics of computer-aided development, green engineering, test engineering and acoustics, as well as "Automotive Engineering" with fundamentals, vehicle drives, body technology & lightweight construction and vehicle acoustics.

Dual studies or studies with in-depth practical

The dual studies programme enables a combination of practical training elements in a company with the theoretical education provided by the university. There is a choice of either the joint model (academic study + vocational training) or the degree course with vocational experience (academic study + intense practical phases). There is an obvious advantage to students here: practically oriented academic study generally enables a particularly smooth transition from university to the world of work. What is more, the student usually receives financial remuneration from the company concerned.

In the joint model, students may start working at the company several months before the start of the first semester, depending on the company concerned. At the start of the course there is an alternation between theory (during the semester) and practical experience (between semesters and during the practical semesters). In order to embark on a dual studies programme, students have to apply to both a company and to THI (be sure to take note of company application deadlines!).

Please note that financial aid programmes are mostly not open to foreign students. For scholarships for students from abroad you may have a look here:

https://www.daad.de/deutschland/stipendium/datenbank/en/12359-finding-scholarships/
Public funding (BAföG) is only available to Germans and to EU citizens if they have spent a considerable part of their education in Germany. The university awards a scholarship called Deutschlandstipendium once a year which cannot fully cover living expenses. Additionally we have limited funds and support some international students for a maximum of one semester. Please do not actively approach the International Office on scholarships, once a year a call for application automatically reaches all international students.

Third party scholarship:

  • If you are an applicant from abroad, you may qualify for a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD): www.daad.de
  • If you are a German students we recommend to research for suitable scholarships on www.mystipendium.de
  • Please note that we cannot offer any guidance or support concerning scholarship applications.

We recommend that single students budget at least 700-900 EUR per month to meet personal expenses (accommodation, health insurance, stay, books, semester contribution)
