Renewable Energy Systems (M. Sc.)

Angeschaltetes leuchtendes SolarenergiemodulApplication period for the winter semester 2027/28: April 1 to July 15, 2027

→ Preparatory programme for international students interested in the Master of Renewable Energy Systems

The ‘SHIFT Study Sprint’ programme prepares international students intensively for the RES Master's programme. It starts in mid-March 2027 and lasts one semester. Application period: 01. October - 15. November 2026. Further information and link to the application: SHIFT Study Sprint RES

Wie entwickelst Du ein zukunftsfähiges Energiesystem?

On the English-taught Master’s programme in Renewable Energy Systems at THI, you will learn to plan modern energy systems based on renewable energy sources in a targeted manner and to design a stable and sustainable energy supply. You will discover how to successfully integrate key technologies and complex system components, including energy storage, grid expansion and flexible consumers.

In practice-oriented modules, you will develop your own energy systems based on real-world requirements. You will be supported by a team of specialists who will teach you about the system-relevant aspects of the components. You will compare, select and size components in accordance with the defined system requirements. In doing so, you will learn which framework conditions and requirements are important for the planning, financing and operation of these systems.

The Master’s programme comprises two semesters of lectures, seminars and laboratory work, as well as one semester dedicated to your Master’s thesis.

In the energy system modules the students will be confronted with the practical tasks to design energy systems. To do so a project oriented approach is necessary and eventually missing knowledge has to be acquired.  Students are supported by a team of specialists. These specialists don’t teach basical knowledge, but the system relevant aspects of components. Students compare, select and dimension components according to the defined requirements of the systems. Thereby they learn which constraints and requirement are important for planing, financing and operating these systems.

The program consists of two terms with lectures, seminars and laboratory work and a final term for the master thesis. In the first term methodological seminars dominate the curriculum and only one energy system is developed. In the second term there are only additional seminars, but the workload is dominated by the development of two energy systems.

Every year three out of four energy systems will be selected: Building ES, Industrial ES, Off-Grid ES und Urban Area ES. Whether the selection will be taken by each single student or by a team agreement depends on the available ressources.

Quick Info

Admission and application
Application for the programme:

The programme starts each year in the winter semester (1 October).

Please apply online via our Primuss portal – you can find all the information here: Master’s application

Entry requirements for the programme:
  • Students must demonstrate extensive experience in the field of energy engineering and provide evidence of their English language proficiency.
  • Successful completion of a Bachelor’s or Diplom degree in engineering or natural sciences, or an equivalent degree from a German university comprising at least 210 ECTS (in accordance with the General Examination Regulations) – or – successful completion of an equivalent degree from a foreign university
  • Admission for applicants with a Bachelor’s degree comprising 180 ECTS:
For applicants holding a Bachelor’s degree with fewer than 210 credits (but at least 180 ECTS), recognition of 30 ECTS based on relevant professional experience is possible, subject to the approval of the Examination Board. The scope and nature of the work must comply with the regulations for a second practical semester at Bavarian universities of applied sciences (Section 13 RaPO) and be evidenced by a certificate of employment, i.e. an internship or professional activity lasting one semester.

Information for applicants:
  • Applicants who hold a bachelor’s degree obtained in Germany or who are EU nationals will be admitted without further assessment, provided that the general entry requirements are met.

  • Applicants who hold a bachelor’s degree obtained abroad will undergo a selection process, provided that the general entry requirements are met.

The selection process comprises the following four points:

  1. Bachelor’s degree grade
  2. Curriculum analysis: This takes into account the nature and scope of the modules in which skills are taught that suggest the applicant is likely to successfully complete the Master’s programme. Where applicable, the university’s ranking is also taken into account, as well as an assessment of certain knowledge in thermodynamics, electrical engineering and mathematics.
  3. Practical experience
  4. Optional: Entrance test for Master’s programmes, such as the GRE, GMAT or GATE

Please note the regulations governing international orientation and selection procedures.

Further information on the application process can be found at the following link:

International

Preparation programme for international students: SHIFT Study Sprint

  • Can credits from the SHIFT Study Sprint RES be transferred to the Master's program in Renewable Energy Systems or applied later?

You will not receive ECTS for the courses in the SHIFT Study Sprint, therefore they cannot be transferred. Additionally, the courses you take will be on a Bachelor´s level preparing for Master´s level expertise.

  • Are participants automatically transferred to the Master RES after completing the SHIFT Study Sprint RES?

No, there is no automatic transfer. Participants must apply separately for the Master's program starting on May 2nd of each year. Completion of the SHIFT Study Sprint will be considered during the application process, and the IWC team will guide applicants through the procedure.

  • Will the successful participation in the SHIFT Study Sprint have a positive impact on my application to the Master of Renewable Energy Systems.

Yes, though it does not directly guarantee an admission but does increase chances.

  • Is the SHIFT Study Sprint optional or mandatory?
The SHIFT Study Sprint is an optional program for those interested in applying to the Master of Renewable Energy Systems. The Study Sprint prepares you for the Master’s and supports your integration into THI and Germany, however it is not a mandatory program.
