The project is dedicated to the safety of AI-supported, automated driving systems. The aim is to identify and reduce uncertainties in data- and model-based decision-making processes - a key prerequisite for automated, cooperative driving (AKF). THI has an optimal research environment with the nationwide lead centre for vehicle safety, CARISSMA, the Bavarian AI mobility hub AImotion Bavaria, regional test fields, and an interdisciplinary team of professors. "The funding from the DFG confirms the scientific relevance of our approach," emphasises Professor Michael Botsch, spokesperson for the research impulse. "With Beyond Validation AI, we want to contribute to significantly improving the reliability and safety of AI systems in road traffic." THI President Professor Walter Schober emphasises the significance of the approval: "The fact that the THI was able to raise five million euros from the DFG in the 'Forschungsimpuls' funding line is proof of the cutting-edge research that our scientists are conducting here. We are very pleased about this success after an elaborate competition process, including a two-day visit by the reviewers on site." Science Minister Markus Blume congratulates: "Three research impulses - three awards for Bavaria's universities of applied sciences: That's a milestone! Ingolstadt, Nuremberg, and Rosenheim demonstrate how practical and progressive cutting-edge research in Bavaria can be. From autonomous driving and health research to the circular economy - the answers to the questions of tomorrow are being developed here. This triple success is a clear signal: out of five funding decisions, three go to Bavaria alone. Bavaria is the number one research state." The project at THI will start on 1 January 2026 with a term of five years and a funding volume of five million euros; an extension for a further three years is possible. Eleven professorships from the AImotion Bavaria and CARISSMA research institutes are involved. |
