Michael Theiler, a Ph.D. student in the ELS research group, successfully represented Ingolstadt University of Technology at the International Power Electronics Conference (IPEC-Nagasaki 2026 – ECCE Asia). The prestigious conference took place from May 31 to June 4, 2026, in Nagasaki, Japan, and is one of the most important international events in the fields of power electronics, energy conversion, and electric drive systems (ipec2026.org).
On June 1, 2026, Michael Theiler presented his research paper titled “Fault Detection and Diagnosis Within Battery Systems Using Autoencoders and Explainable AI” during the “Battery Diagnosis and Estimation” session. The paper’s co-authors were Can Karaali and Christian Endisch.
The presentation focused on the early detection of safety-critical conditions in battery systems and the reliable identification of defective battery cells. Modern AI methods were used for fault diagnosis to investigate their added value compared to conventional methods in battery systems.
“The results show that modern AI methods can improve both fault detection and the identification of defective battery cells, particularly in the case of faults that are difficult to detect. This work thus makes an important contribution to the development of safe battery systems,” explains Michael Theiler.
In recognition of his outstanding work, Michael Theiler was presented with the First Prize Paper Award during the conference, which he proudly accepted. This award honors outstanding scientific contributions.
In addition to the technical sessions, the conference offered a varied program featuring numerous presentations, tutorials, and keynote speeches by internationally renowned experts. The International Night on June 2, 2026, and the conference banquet on June 3, 2026, also provided opportunities for professional and personal exchanges with researchers from around the world.
